I-79 'Missing' Ramps Project Wins Dual Honors
(PITTSBURGH) - Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. will receive two prestigious
awards for its I-79 "missing" ramps project west of Pittsburgh. The
American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has chosen the project for
its annual Civil Engineering Achievement. The Engineers' Society of
Western Pennsylvania (ESWP) will recognize the same job for Project of
the Year honors. Balfour Beatty Infrastructure began construction on
the $67 million project in October 2006 and completed work in December
2008. The team installed the ramps, which had never before existed on
that portion of I-79. The work involved placement of giant girders,
some weighing more than 200,000 pounds.
"This project was a
great test of our engineering and construction capabilities," said Jim
Moynihan, president and CEO of Balfour Beatty Infrastructure. "Our
people met those challenges admirably, and we're grateful these
organizations have recognized our efforts. Being singled us out for
such awards is a true honor."
The contract with the Pennsylvania
Department of Transportation required that the crew raise more than a
mile of the existing roadway by 50 feet to create room for extra lanes.
One curved steel girder bridge weighed in at more than 4.4 million
pounds and was composed of 60 girders. The work was at the interchange
of I-79 and State Route 22/30 (Parkway West), in an environmentally
sensitive area.
The ASCE bestows its annual Civil Engineering
Achievement honor upon a project that contributes to the well-being of
the community, demonstrates resourcefulness in problem solving,
preserves the environment, and meets several other criteria of
excellence. Balfour Beatty Infrastructure will receive the award at a
banquet Feb. 20, 2010, at the Engineer's Society of Western
Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh.
The annual ESWP award recognizes
outstanding projects completed during the past five years in western
Pennsylvania. The award banquet is Feb. 17, 2010, at the East Club
Lounge of Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.
