Liberty Mutual honors Balfour Beatty Infrastructure team for safety excellence at Crystal Springs Bypass Tunnel(SAN
FRANCISCO, Calif.) – Liberty Mutual has recognized joint venture
partners M.L. Shank and Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. for its
spotless safety record at the Crystal Springs Bypass Tunnel site in San
Francisco. The project team logged 170,000 man hours without a
recordable injury during a period of 15 months.
"It's an
excellent achievement to go this long without any recordable injuries
at all, even minor injuries," said Ray Bond, president and CEO for
Balfour Beatty Infrastructure. "They're cutting a tunnel with minimal
clearance on either side, only about four inches. With so little elbow
room, workers have been extra careful. They've done an outstanding job
keeping out of harm's way." Work began on the $55.6
million tunnel project in early 2009. The tunnel, which runs 4,200 feet
and spans 11 feet in diameter, will accommodate a pipeline carrying
drinking water to Bay Area residents.
Representatives from
Liberty Mutual, which provides the company's worker's compensation
insurance, presented a plaque during a ceremony on Aug. 20.
"As
part of our comprehensive Zero Harm safety program, workers at the job
site stress the buddy system, with everyone being responsible for the
safety of the whole operation," said Rodney Canada, senior director of
Environment, Health and Safety for Balfour Beatty Infrastructure. "The
company also makes sure it hires people experienced in working
underground safely. When you add in the briefings and hazard analysis,
we have the basis of a safe project site."
The project, which uses a high-tech boring machine, is scheduled for completion in 2011.
