Balfour Beatty Infrastructure to Begin Work on San Francisco Tunnel(ATLANTA)
- Work will begin in early 2009 on the $55.6 million New Crystal
Springs Bypass Tunnel, a joint venture between Balfour Beatty
Infrastructure, Inc. and M.L. Shank Co. for the San Francisco Public
Utilities Commission. The project calls for the drilling of a
4,200-foot tunnel that is 11 feet in diameter. The tunnel, which will
have a welded steel liner, is designed to accommodate a pipeline that
carries drinking water to residents of San Francisco and the Bay Area's
Peninsula region. "This is another excellent opportunity for us and for
our joint venture partner, M.L. Shank," said Jim Moynihan, CEO and
president of Balfour Beatty Infrastructure. "We have an outstanding
track record of completing tunnels efficiently and safely. We're
looking forward to another chance to demonstrate our capabilities and
partnering strength."
The team will cut vertical shafts to allow
positioning of the boring machine. The shafts will remain in place
after the job is complete to provide access for ongoing maintenance.
The tunnel will connect to an existing pipeline in the water system.
The project is scheduled for completion in 2011.
Balfour Beatty
Infrastructure is using its own custom-built boring machine with a
12-foot diameter, designed to cut through all kinds of materials,
including rock. The New Crystal Springs project calls for boring
through an area composed mainly of sandstone. The tunnel will pass
under the San Mateo Creek in the earthquake-prone region.
