Balfour Beatty Infrastructure to Share Environmental Award for Texas Toll Road Project

(AUSTIN) - Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Inc., along with Lone Star Infrastructure (LSI) consortium partners Fluor Corporation and T.J. Lambrecht Construction, will receive honors for posting a spotless environmental record during the Texas State Highway 130 project.

The Texas Council of Engineering Companies will present LSI with a gold medal April 4 at the 2008 Engineering Excellence Awards Banquet in Irving, Texas. LSI undertook the design and construction of the 49-mile, $1.5 billion toll road that serves as a reliever route to I-35 in central Texas.

"This award is confirmation that all of the environmental planning, leadership, training and work LSI has demonstrated on the project were a success," said John Rempe, the project's director of construction and an operations director for Balfour Beatty Infrastructure. "Our objective was a perfect environmental record - no incidents. We have managed to maintain that."

The gold medal is one of only 12 projects state-wide for which the Texas Council of Engineering Companies has granted top engineering honors.

LS's extensive SH 130 project began with a groundbreaking in October 2003. More than 40 miles of the highway are now open, with the final segment scheduled to open in the spring of 2008. The toll road extends from I-35 north of Georgetown to U.S. Highway 183 southeast of Austin.

Environmental leadership is a top priority on the project. Every project employee receives formal environmental training before being allowed onto the worksite. Additionally, the project has implemented voluntary initiatives, such as the placement of bat houses under bridges. The project also formed partnerships with local schools to replant trees displaced from school grounds by the new construction.

"We take our environmental stewardship seriously," said Rempe. "We are proud of our track record. Not only did this project meet its zero-incident goal, but we also made it a priority to provide the surrounding communities with some ‘green' benefits along the way. We consider that a real success."
