ESWP Honors Balfour Beatty Infrastructure for Work on I-79 ‘Missing' Ramps Project(PITTBURGH)
- The Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania (ESWP) has awarded its
Project of the Year honors to Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. for
the I-79 "missing" ramps project just west of Pittsburgh.
Balfour
Beatty Infrastructure began construction on the $67 million project in
October 2006 and completed work in December 2008. The team installed
the ramps, which had never existed on that portion of I-79 before. The
work involved placement of giant girders, some weighing more than
200,000 pounds.
"This project was a great test of our
engineering and construction capabilities," said Jim Moynihan,
president and CEO of Balfour Beatty Infrastructure. "Our people met
those challenges admirably, and we're grateful that the ESWP has
recognized our efforts. Being singled us out for such an award is a
true honor."
The contract with the Pennsylvania Department of
Transportation required that the crew raise more than a mile of the
existing roadway by 50 feet to create room for extra lanes. One curved
steel girder bridge weighed in at more than 4.4 million pounds and was
composed of 60 girders. The work was at the interchange of I-79 and
State Route 22/30 (Parkway West), in an environmentally sensitive area.
The annual award recognizes outstanding projects completed during the
past five years in western Pennsylvania. Balfour Beatty Infrastructure
will accept the award at a banquet on Feb. 17, 2010, at the East Club
Lounge of Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.
The ESWP is more than 100
years old and provides a forum for the professional development of
members, along with facilities for their social interaction.
