Balfour Beatty Infrastructure to Receive Project of Year Honors
for Freeport Facility

(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) - The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is honoring Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. for its work on the Freeport Regional Water Intake project in Sacramento, CA. The $121 million project won honors as the Sacramento section's 2010 Outstanding Engineering Project Award in the water/wastewater category.

Balfour Beatty Infrastructure began construction of the intake and pumping plant in December 2006. The intake has a capacity of 185 million gallons per day and will use eight 2000-horsepower motors to move water from the Sacramento River into an 84-inch raw water pipeline. The team is the process of building the Vineyard Surface Water Treatment Plant, which the Freeport facility will supply. Balfour Beatty Infrastructure will receive the award during a banquet Feb. 17 at the Hyatt Regency in Sacramento.

"This is just one in a series of huge water and wastewater infrastructure jobs our Western region team has undertaken in recent years," said Jim Moynihan, president and CEO of Balfour Beatty Infrastructure. "These are highly complex projects, so getting this kind of recognition means a lot to us. Our people can be very proud of this accomplishment, which will have a meaningful impact on the community for many years to come."

The project called for four large-diameter surge tanks, a sedimentation collection system, a new substation, state-of-the-art fish screens, and tunnels bored under I-5 and Freeport Boulevard. The team also gave considerable attention to the building's aesthetics, constructing glass walls, a structural steel frame with decorated concrete and a wall for displaying art.
