Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Takes Home Award for Historic Bridge Rehabilitation
(PITTSBURGH) - The Association for Bridge Construction and Design (ABCD) has honored
Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. for its extensive work on the
Homestead Grays Bridge project in Homestead, Penn. The Pittsburgh
chapter of the ABCD bestowed its Outstanding Rehabilitated Bridge Award
during a recent awards dinner.
"This is a great honor and we're
certainly proud of our team for doing such outstanding work," said Jim
Moynihan, president and chief operating officer for Balfour Beatty
Infrastructure. "This historic bridge means a lot to the community and
our people executed its rehabilitation masterfully."
Balfour
Beatty Infrastructure finished the two-year, $37 million project ahead
of schedule for the County of Allegheny Department of Public Works. A
ribbon-cutting in October 2007 inaugurated the 3,000-foot-long bridge.
The
County of Allegheny Department of Public Works contracted with Balfour
Beatty Infrastructure for the rehabilitation. It called for structural
steel repairs, ramp reconstruction, bearing replacements and various
substructure concrete repairs. The team widened and placed new asphalt
on the bridge's deck. The project also involved a complete repainting
job and replacement of the sidewalks.
Next to the bridge is the
former site of U.S. Steel's Homestead Works, now a commercial
marketplace. Balfour Beatty Infrastructure used gray paint on the
bridge to match the uniform color of the steelworkers on the historic
Homestead Grays African-American baseball team. Civil Engineering
Magazine featured the award-winning bridge rehabilitation in its March
2008 issue.
