Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Celebrates the Early Completion of Pittsburgh's Homestead Grays Bridge

(PITTSBURGH) - Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc., a leading heavy civil engineering contractor, celebrated the early completion of the Homestead Grays Bridge project alongside its client, County of Allegheny Department of Public Works, during a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday in the community of Homestead, Pennsylvania.

"The Homestead Grays Bridge is an essential artery for our region and an important connection to a regional shopping and entertainment destination," said Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato. "This was a complex project as it was necessary to keep the bridge open to traffic throughout construction. I want to thank Balfour Beatty Infrastructure for setting a high standard of excellence and for completing the project ahead of schedule for our thousands of motorists who travel the span each day."

Balfour Beatty Infrastructure was awarded the $36 million Homestead Grays Bridge rehabilitation in October 2005 and completed the project one month ahead of schedule. Over the course of two years the company performed structural steel repairs, ramp reconstruction, bearing replacements, various substructure concrete repairs, widening and poured new asphalt on the bridge's deck. The project also included replacing the sidewalks and traffic barriers and repainting the entire structure.

"Everyone from the Allegheny County community we worked with, from the businesses and motorists to our clients at the Department of Public Works, was a true partner throughout every step of a very complex construction process," said Mick McCarry, Balfour Beatty Infrastructure's chief operating officer and Central Region vice president. "It was a positive experience and we are proud to have delivered on our commitment to safely execute a high quality and on-time rehabilitation of this historic bridge."

The 3,000 foot long bridge carries 40,000-plus motorists a day and is adjacent to the Waterfront, a commercial market place built on the former site of U.S. Steel's Homestead Works. The bridge was repainted gray to match the uniform color its namesake, the historic Homestead Grays African-American baseball team made up of steelworkers.
