Houston's IH-10 Highway Project Goes to Balfour Beatty Infrastructure
(AUSTIN, TX) - The Texas Department of Transportation has awarded its newest IH-10 road work
to Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc., an industry-leading civil engineering contractor. The $48.5
million project involves 3.4 miles of road construction and overpass bridges. The job is scheduled to
begin in the spring of 2010 and will take 34 months to complete.
The project, just west of downtown Houston in Harris County, calls for an extension and widening of
frontage roads to three lanes. It includes construction of five bridges over frontage roads and the
widening of three bridges over existing main lanes. The Balfour Beatty Infrastructure team will also
rehabilitate two bridges at cross streets.
"This should ease some of the congestion along this corridor in an area that really needs some relief,"
said John Rempe, vice president of Balfour Beatty Infrastructure's Southwest Region. "We've done
some major highway work in the Houston area, including the Katy Freeway reconstruction and
another large-scale project on Interstate 10. It's made a positive difference in traffic flow. We expect
this to do the same."
The team will also perform an overhaul of the existing drainage system, including concrete box
culverts, reinforced concrete pipes and a pump station to handle runoff. Included in the contract are
upgrades of existing traffic signals and signs.
"As always, we'll take great pains to ensure the IH-10 project is safe, high-quality roadwork," said
Jim Moynihan, president and CEO of Balfour Beatty Infrastructure. "This is yet another opportunity
for Balfour Beatty Infrastructure to grow a strong presence in Texas. TxDOT has provided us some of
our biggest jobs ever and we've successfully met every challenge associated with them."
