Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Awarded Contract for Bridges Over Little Pee Dee River(MULLINS,
S.C.) – The South Carolina Department of Transportation has awarded
Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. a three-year contract to replace
two bridges over the Little Pee Dee River in Mullins, S.C. The team
will also realign the roadway to accommodate the bridges.
Work
is set to begin in December 2010. To keep traffic flowing during the
$12.8 million project, Balfour Beatty Infrastructure will perform work
in phases. The completion date for the project is November 2013.
“The
Little Pee Dee River is an ambitious and environmentally sensitive
project,” said Ray Bond, president and CEO of Balfour Beatty
Infrastructure. “Our project teams have deep experience and an
excellent track record working at sites such as this. We expect this
job to go smoothly for all parties involved.”
The two bridges
measure 1,080 and 540 feet long. The former, supported by drilled
shafts, will extend over a wetland area. The latter, supported by pile,
will span the river itself.
“In addition to the ecological
concerns, there will also be a fish moratorium, which is a period when
we’ll be prohibited from doing any work in the water,” said Mark
Johnnie, vice president of the Southeast Region. “We faced the
same kind of restriction on the Trent River Bridge project in New Bern,
N.C., which we recently and successfully finished. It requires careful
planning and we’re ready for the challenge.”
The Little Pee Dee River is a tributary of the Pee Dee River, which begins in the Appalachian Mountains.
