Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Wins the AGC of America's Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Award
(LAS VEGAS, Nevada) - Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. was recognized today by the Associated
General Contractors of America (AGC) with the prestigious Marvin M. Black Excellence in
Partnering Award during a special breakfast ceremony at the AGC of America's 89th Annual
Convention at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas.
Balfour Beatty Infrastructure received the award for its successful collaboration with client Sound
Transit on the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel light rail retrofit project in Seattle, Washington.
"Balfour Beatty Infrastructure is deeply committed to the partnering process and winning the Marvin
M. Black is further testimony to the many rewards a company receives when it emphasizes working in
partnership as a highest priority," said Bill Ogle, senior vice president for Balfour Beatty
Infrastructure's Western Region. "We proudly share this award with Sound Transit and our
many key stakeholders in Seattle with whom we formed a dynamic and highly efficient team."
The retrofitted Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel reopened on schedule to the public for bus service in
September 2007. Sound Transit's Link light rail trains are currently being tested in the tunnel and will
begin carrying passengers in 2009 as part of the Link light rail project connecting downtown Seattle
and Sea-Tac International Airport with about 15 miles of new light rail service.
"Completing the tunnel retrofit project on time required a tremendous amount of coordination
between Sound Transit and its contractors as well as other local government agencies," said Sound
Transit Link light rail Executive Director Ahmad Fazel. "We applaud Balfour Beatty Infrastructure for
its dedication to making this project a success."
Balfour Beatty Infrastructure was responsible for retrofitting the 1.3-mile bus tunnel with the latest
light rail technology, building a stub tunnel beneath Pine Street, installing new station identification
signage, adding new accessibility features for visually impaired passengers, and enhancing overall
station appearance.
Named for AGC's 1991 President Marvin M. Black, an ardent supporter of the partnering process, the
Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Award recognizes construction companies that best
exemplify the spirit of partnering while working with project stakeholders. Contractors honored with
this award stand out for their ability to sign a formal partnering charter, achieve a common goal, honor
all stakeholders, resolve conflict, improve communication, incorporate team-building, and most
importantly, result in superior projects.
