Advocacy Group to Honor Balfour
Beatty Rail for Minority Hiring, Subcontracting Practices
(LOS ANGELES) - An organization that promotes minority hiring and business opportunity in the
Los Angeles area is honoring Balfour Beatty Rail, Inc. as its Public Works Contractor of the Year.
The Greater Los Angeles African American Chamber of Commerce (GLAAACC) will present the
award to Joe Reed, vice president - Transit, on March 20 during a gala banquet. The event will feature
such dignitaries as California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio
Villaraigosa.
The GLAAACC bestows the annual honor on a company that has demonstrated a high level of
responsiveness toward the African American and small business community. The 15th Annual
Economic Awards Dinner will begin at 7 p.m. in the Sheraton Los Angeles Downtown Hotel.
"This is truly an honor," said Reed. "It means a lot when such an outstanding organization recognizes
us. This group does a tremendous amount of good for the community and we're happy they've chosen
to honor Balfour Beatty Rail during this important, high-profile event."
A survey of the GLAAACC's membership - about 300 respondents - ranked Balfour Beatty Rail
favorably in its hiring of minority workers and subcontractors. The GLAAACC reaches out to African
American businesses by promoting alliances, legislative advocacy and other opportunities. The group
also provides scholarships for graduates who live in the inner city.
Balfour Beatty Rail has been working in Los Angeles on the METRO GoldLine East Side Extension
since July 2005. The project is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2008. It includes the
design, installation and testing of the rail systems for this new extension that begins at the southern
limit of the Los Angeles Union Station and extends into east Los Angeles.
