Golden Gate BridgeClient: Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District Location: San Francisco, CA Start Date: June 1997 End Date: February 2002 Final Contract Amount: $59.6 million
Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc.
helped to improve the Golden Gate Bridge's vulnerability to earthquakes
by performing a seismic retrofit. Five independent truss spans were
strengthened by connecting them together so they can move together as
one unit. Four steel support towers were replaced one-by-one and new
foundations were constructed for each.
During the five-year project, which began in 1997, Balfour Beatty Infrastructure employees
encountered an endangered species - the Mission Blue Butterfly. All
necessary precautions were taken to protect the Mission Blue Butterfly
and its habitat so that construction work would not bring harm to this
rare and beautiful creature while we successfully completed the project.
Balfour Beatty Infrastructure was pleased to have participated in preserving and
strengthening the structural integrity of this international icon.
