MLK Bridge Client: City of Toledo Location: Toledo, OH Start Date: May 2008 End Date: July 2008 Contract Amount: $35 million
Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. recently undertook the replacement
of the MLK Bridge, a large bascule bridge in Toledo, Ohio. The project
team finished the work in January 2008, nearly two weeks ahead of
schedule, despite high winds and wintry conditions on the Maumee River.
The
job called for the replacement of the bridge's bascule spans, bascule
span counterweights and grid-fill deck. Workers installed the center
structural members tying the two halves of the bridge together, also
completing the bridge’s mechanical, operating and electrical systems.
The
bridge was completely closed to traffic as the final two-inch deck
overlay was placed during a 48-hour break in the weather.
