Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge (Croatan Sound)
As part of North Carolina's plans for providing improved access to emerging tourist areas and to provide a more effective escape route in the event of a hurricane, the State Department of Transportation awarded Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. a contract for the Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge -- the longest bridge in the state. This new five-mile, four-lane bridge served as a replacement of an existing two-lane bridge that was in a less strategic location. Because crossed the Croatan Sound, the bridge involved extensive work in an environmentally sensitive area.

Owner:

North Carolina Department of Transportation

Location:

Manteo, N.C.

Contract Value:

$91.6 million

In addition, this was the state's first full-scale implementation of a bridge constructed with a durability-based, high-performance concrete. The bridge required more than 43 acres of concrete on the riding surface and more than 7,000 tons of reinforcement steel for the bridge deck alone.

The Portland Cement Association recognized this bridge for its excellence in design and construction with an award in 2002.
