San Mateo-Hayward Bridge
The San Mateo-Hayward Bridge was originally constructed in the 1920s to provide a route between San Francisco and its eastern suburbs. Increasing traffic volumes caused this roadway to be a major source of congestion in the San Francisco area.

Owner:

California Department of Transportation (Caltrans)

Location:

San Mateo, California

Contract Value:

$132 million

Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. widened the existing San Mateo bridge from four lanes to six, plus shoulders.

The project called for the construction of a three-lane, five-mile bridge adjacent to the existing San Mateo-Hayward Bridge. The new concrete trestle bridge (constructed with a temporary work trestle over water) consisted of precast bent caps supported by driven precast cylinder piles more than 110 feet long.

Other work on the project included traffic barriers, electrical, lighting, drainage systems and a concrete coating system to protect the structure from its harsh marine environment.
