SH 121 / SH 289 Collin County and I-35E InterchangeClient: Texas Department of Transportation Location: Dallas, TX Start Date: May 2003 End Date: July 2007 Contract Amount: $87.3 million
Increasing population and development in the area surrounding SH 121 resulted in
highway congestion, along with poor mobility, safety and air quality.
Under two separate contracts, Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc.
worked on two significant projects along State Highway 121 in Texas.
The first project, SH 121/SH 289 in Collin County, called for the
reconstruction of more than five miles of existing highway, and the
replacement of an existing at-grade interchange with a three-level
interchange.
Increasing volumes of traffic and the old-style
design of the highway entrance and exit ramps were creating a dangerous
situation for motorists on one of the busiest roads in the Columbus
area. The state combined two projects to ensure coordination
between all phases of the project activity.
The second of these
two projects involved the addition of 3.3 miles of main lanes from SH
121 to Denton Creek to east of I-35E, along with the construction of
retaining walls. The project also includes reconstructing the
interchange at I-35E and SH 121.
SH 121 was identified as one of
the most critical projects in the Dallas area for providing access to
emerging suburban areas.
