Smith Creek Parkway
The Smith Creek Parkway has been a priority project for the Wilmington area since 1972. It needed improvement to alleviate traffic congestion on I-40 and US-117, eliminate delays at several key intersections and help North Carolina revitalize local businesses in the downtown area. Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. began work on this project in 2002 to widen and extend the parkway, construct 10 bridges of which three cross the creek and three more cross an existing railroad, add 6.7 lane miles of roadway, demolish the existing bridge structure, and perform the work in an environmentally sensitive area.

Owner:

North Carolina Department of Transportation

Location:

Wilmington, North Carolina

Contract Value:

$41 million

The environmental issues were especially complex. Many studies since the 1970s have taken into account such issues as noise, abandoned landfill sites and wetland incursion. Balfour Beatty Infrastructure worked carefully to construct bridges over the pristine wetland areas, and to ensure proper protection and care during the demolition of the old bridge.

The North Carolina Department of Labor has recognized Balfour Beatty Infrastructure for its safe work practices at this project.
