In an effort to improve safety and reduce major traffic backups resulting from freight train crossings, the Maryland State Highway Administration awarded a contract to Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. to construct a new bridge to carry trains over MD 450 (Annapolis Road) and Upshur Street in Bladensburg.

The $53 million project involved constructing 1.25 miles of railroad track for the grade separation of the CSX railroad, eight retaining walls, one temporary bridge and three permanent bridges. The new track was moved up and over MD 450.

Balfour Beatty Infrastructure worked with its sister company, Balfour Beatty Rail, Inc. on the project, which was complete in April 2009.
