Treating water for millions before it goes to homes and businesses is no simple process. Water districts need to manage and monitor water intake and treatment facilities to provide high-quality drinking water to their customers. Many plants have been operating for a long period of time and need modernization.
The Sacramento River Intake facility and the E.A. Fairbairn Treatment plant account for nearly 85 percent of Sacramento's water supply. The city needed to double its facility's size to keep up with the current demands. Established in 1964, the E.A. Fairbairn Treatment plant required an upgrade.
Balfour Beatty Infrastructure was awarded a $53 million contract to increase that plant's capacity from 80 million gallons per day to 160. Some of the work involved construction of new lagoons, flocculators, filters and a clearwell, as well as new mechanical equipment, piping systems, and electrical instrumentation and controls.
