Seattle Bus Tunnel
Client: Sound Transit Location: Seattle, WA Start Date: May 2004 End Date: June 2007 Contract Amount: $90 million
The
Western Region has successfully completed work to expand and retrofit
the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel on behalf of client Sound Transit.
Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. won the Marvin M. Black partnering
award for this project.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony at the
Westlake Station in downtown Seattle inaugurated the newly retrofitted
1.3-mile tunnel in September 2007 and the tunnel reopened on schedule for
public bus service.
Balfour Beatty Rail, a subcontractor on the $90 million project, retrofitted the
tunnel
to handle the latest light-rail technology. Teams built the Pine Street
Stub Tunnel, installed new station identification signage, added
accessibility features for visually impaired passengers and enhanced
overall station appearance.
