Seattle Bus Tunnel
The Western Region has successfully completed work to expand and retrofit the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel on behalf of client Sound Transit. Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. won the Marvin M. Black partnering award for this project.

Owner:

Sound Transit

Location:

Seattle, Washington

Contract Value:

$82.7 million

A ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Westlake Station in downtown Seattle inaugurated the newly retrofitted 1.3-mile tunnel on Sept. 18 and the tunnel reopened on schedule for public bus service on Sept. 24, 2007.

Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, a subcontractor on the project, retrofitted the tunnel to handle the latest light-rail technology. Teams built the Pine Street Stub Tunnel, installed new station identification signage, added accessibility features for visually impaired passengers and enhanced overall station appearance.

Sound Transit light rail trains will join buses in the tunnel when the rail line begins operation between Downtown Seattle and the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in 2009. For more information about this project, click here.
